Your Time Is Truly Precious

Every year as I get close to celebrating my birthday (Nov 29th), I know that a gateway will open up to usher in the new energy that I need to align with so I can walk with my dreams. Each year is a new opportunity to truly own my power in an expanded way. And I appreciate the gifts that I am always given.

As I was meditating this morning, a memory of an old story popped into my head. Since I know that these ideas are God’s currency (as my friend Elizabeth Longo would say) I paid attention and would like to share it with you.

Imagine you had a bank account that deposited $86,400 each morning. The account carries over no balance from day to day, and every evening cancels whatever part of the amount you had failed to use during the day. What would you do? Draw out every dollar each day I’m sure!

This is our personal bank account: Time. Every day we gain 86,400 seconds and every night it ends. You cannot borrow from today to add to tomorrow. Whatever you do not use is gone and you cannot get it back. You cannot take out a loan against it or give it to a friend or family member.

It is up to you how you spend it.

When the late Nadine Stair of Louisville, Kentucky was 85 years old, she was asked what she would do if she had her life to live over again.

“I’d make more mistakes next time,” she said. “I’d relax. I would limber up. I would be sillier than I have been on this trip. I would take fewer things seriously. I would take more chances. I would climb more mountains and swim more rivers. I would eat more ice cream and less beans. I would perhaps have more actual troubles, but I’d have fewer imaginary ones.”

“You see, I’m one of those people who live sensibly and sanely hour after hour, day after day. Oh, I’ve had my moments, and if I had to do it over again, I’d have more of them. In fact, I’d try to have nothing else. Just moments, one after another, instead of living so many years ahead of each day. I’ve been one of those people who never goes anywhere without a thermometer, a hot water bottle, and a raincoat. If I had to do it over again, I would travel lighter than I have. If I had my life to live over, I would start barefoot earlier in the spring and stay that way later in the fall. I would go to more dances. I would ride more merry-go-rounds and I would pick more daisies.”

My theme this year is living the AND…taking things lighter and making a bigger difference in the world, diving deep into life and playing full heartedly, teaching and learning,  leading and following, being independent and being part of a community. The time of the either/or is over. This is the time of the both/and.
